J Bradley Greer "Prochromatism"

September 14-October 12 | 2024

Colorful geometric abstract art with textured triangular shapes forming squares

The Trophy Room LA is thrilled to present “Prochromatism,” a solo exhibition by Los Angeles-based artist J Bradley Greer. The exhibition runs from September 14 to October 12, 2024, and there will be an artist reception on September 14 from 5 to 9 p.m. Please join the artist and gallery in celebration.

Greer’s often whimsical paintings show exuberant proliferations of biomorphic shapes and serial, geometric forms that slyly reference human anatomy. The show’s title itself is a fusion of theory and flesh, a combination of the words “procreation” and “chromatic”—a reference to the shapes and colors that seem to spawn across the artist’s canvases.

Using thick applications of paint to create tempting and tactile surfaces, Greer toes the line between painting pleasant color studies and illustrating the orifices and protrusions of the human body. In these life-affirming geometries, Greer’s shapes stack and interlock, each one dependent on another. Opposition and intimacy animate these paintings—they seem more like living colonies of color than studies in tone. Like a first-generation surrealist, Greer enjoys the Rorsachian nature of his practice, believing what viewers see in his work often reveals much about their subconscious desires.

J Bradley Greer (b. 1961) completed his studies at the Parsons School of Design in Paris, France, in 1983; received his BFA, from the Otis College of Art & Design, Los Angeles, CA, in 1985; and completed his MFA from California State University in Los Angeles, CA, in 2006.

Greer showed actively in New York City through the 90’s, and had a solo show curated by Bill Arning at White Columns in 1990. After returning to his native Los Angeles, Greer painted and taught public middle school and high school art students. He introduced his new body of work in a two-person show with Bill Arning Exhibitions in 2019, and exhibitions with Sullivan Goss and Good Naked galleries.
