ARTISTS
"Eleanor Arbor (b. 1993) is a Los Angeles-based artist and mother working in plaster basrelief. In her process, she builds up a heavy layer of pigmented plaster to scratch scenes within, not unlike scoring wet earth with one's fingertips and a twig. Arbor works quickly in the setting plaster, using immediacy to leave a visceral, aggressive, and richly textured record of the artist's hand, evoking the messiness of our human condition. The work’s subjects are drawn from the natural world, specifically Arbor’s Southern California surroundings. The cycle of life is a constant theme in her work. Depicting plants, animals, mother, and child, the artist explores what it means to exist in the natural world, to birth life, to witness death, and to grow."
"Ric Heitzman is a Los Angeles painter with a background in the arts, entertainment, and education. Born in Texas, he received his BFA from East Texas State University. Shortly following graduation, he was in a two-person show at the Houston Museum of Contemporary Art, a print and drawing show at the Dallas Museum of Fine Art, and a performance and multimedia exhibition, APEWEEK, at the Allen Street Gallery. APEWEEK developed into a radio program on KCHU in Dallas. After this initial success, he moved to Chicago with a scholarship to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He earned his MFA in filmmaking in 1980, a vibrant time with the still-active Hairy Who and experimental filmmakers, hugely influential to his development.
Moving to New York City in the early 80s, Ric pursued painting and published Matador, an underground comic, but when he was asked to help design Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, his entertainment career flourished. His work on the show garnered him four Emmys for co-production design and art direction for the series’ titles. At the same time, he also became a SAG actor for his voice work and puppetry. He moved to Los Angeles with the series and began showing at La Luz de Jesus Gallery and other venues. After years in the entertainment industry, Ric became a professor of animation at Woodbury University, a position he held until 2018. During that time, he continued to exhibit in solo and group shows, most notably in Design for the Child 1900-2000 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Recently, Ric published a book of his ballpoint pen drawings. In 2023, he exhibited a collection of drawings at Face Guts in Los Angeles. He is currently focused on large-scale paintings and plans to publish a sketchbook and short film devoted to his stencil paintings."
