The Trophy Room LA is thrilled to present “May Flowers,” a group exhibition featuring work from nine artists exploring the potential of the flower still life. The exhibition runs from May 11 to June 15, 2024, and there will be an opening reception on Saturday, May 11, from 5-9 pm. Please join the artists and gallery in celebration.
Creating a still life requires a certain slowness, a careful brand of attention that might border on meditative. As the pace of daily life accelerates, the floral still life blossoms in response: in the 17th century, European still lifes evolved as vanitas portraits—lush, detailed arrangements symbolizing the ultimately fleeting nature of this moment, this life; later, Impressionists used their harried, modern brushstrokes to articulate bouquets of fresh-cut flowers. A vase of flowers comes to embody an artist’s emotions, or an entire milieu.
“Still life” is itself a contradiction in terms, which the pieces in “May Flowers” explore through combinations of realism and abstraction, naturalism and absurdity. In this group show, The Trophy Room brings together nine international and American artists approaching the floral still life from different angles, with a variety of media.
The artworks in this show range from Jesse Zuo’s intimate vignette to Sarah Bonache’s sweeping and seductive shapes. Patrick Pipkin-Arnold’s quilting transforms a vase of flowers into new geometries; ceramicist John Flores’ botanical sculptures sprout toes; Sarah Bedford’s high-contrast bouquets embody decay and rebirth; and Satoko Okuna’s forms and figures infuse ancient vessels and floral motifs with new spirit.
This collection of works blooms into a familiar and frustrating garden that expands and envelops the gallery. The forms here are recognizable, but dynamic, encouraging reflection. The only choice is to stand still and take it all in. To pause.
